Bringing home a new pet is exciting! At Paw Haven, we love seeing newly adopted pets come through our doors, and we also know that the first few weeks at home can leave owners with a lot of questions. Adjustment takes time, and understanding what is happening from your new pet’s perspective makes those first few weeks a lot less stressful for everyone.
If you have not heard of the 3-3-3 rule, it is a helpful framework for understanding what newly adopted pets go through during their first few months at home.
The First 3 Days: Destress, Decompress
The first three days are all about decompression. Your new dog or cat has just left a loud, stressful shelter environment and landed in a completely unfamiliar place. Hiding, sleeping more than usual, eating less, or seeming to shut down are all normal responses to that kind of change. This is not a reflection of their personality or a sign something is wrong. They are just processing.
Give them a quiet, contained space to decompress. For cats, that often means starting in a single room rather than the whole house. For dogs, a crate or a calm corner with their own bed and water works well to give them a safe space. Resist the urge to invite everyone over to meet them right away. The first few days should be low-key and low-pressure.
The First Three Weeks: Routine Builds Trust
After a few days at home, your pet will begin to get their bearings. This is when you will start to see more of their personality, and when they may start testing the boundaries a little. A dog who seemed perfectly happy in their crate the first few days might suddenly decide the couch is a great cuddle spot. A cat might get bolder about exploring the whole house.
This is the phase where routine really matters. Feeding, walking, and interacting at consistent times every day gives your pet a sense of structure and predictability that builds trust. Keep training sessions short, positive, and focused on the basics. You are not trying to teach them everything at once, you are just helping them understand how life works in your home.
Paws-itevly Perfect Tip from Paw Haven: The first few weeks are a great time to schedule a wellness exam. We can check for any health concerns that may not have been caught at the shelter and give you a clear picture of what ongoing care looks like for your pet. For new clients, wellness exams are available for $25 at our Lakeland location!
The First Three Months: Their Personality Shines
Eventually, your pet realizes this is their forever home. The personality they had tucked away starts to come out and it is such a joy to see!
Remember, this does not mean everything is perfectly smooth by month three. Some pets, especially those with more complicated histories, take longer to fully settle down.
A Few Practical Notes
Keep their food consistent with whatever they were eating at the shelter when you first bring them home. Switching food too quickly on top of everything else can cause digestive upset. Introduce any new food gradually over a week or two and mix it in with their existing food at first.
Be patient with setbacks. There will be days that feel like a step backward. That is part of the process and does not mean you did something wrong. Adopting a pet is a big adjustment for the whole household, not just the animal.
If you have questions about your new pet’s health, behavior, or what to expect in those first few weeks, we are happy to help. Book a new patient exam online at pawhavenvet.com or give us a call at (863) 334-0158. We would love to meet them!
