If you have been to Paw Haven Lakeland recently, there is a good chance you have already met our newest doctor. Dr. Regan Blackburn joined our team, bringing with her a love for dermatology, a passion for fear-free care, and a rescue animal count that is pretty impressive.
A True Lakeland Local
Dr. Blackburn was born and raised right here in Lakeland. She graduated from Lakeland High School and went on to earn her Bachelor of Science in Biology (with minors in Chemistry and Psychology) from Florida Southern College. For vet school, she made a big leap to the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, graduating in 2017.
“The weather and corn fields were a huge change for this Florida girl,” she says. “I admit I sometimes miss the seasons and colder weather, but I’ll never miss shoveling snow!”
After school, she found her way back home, and the team here at Paw Haven is particularly glad she did!
What Drives Her as a Veterinarian
Dr. Blackburn is passionate about two things that go hand in hand: the human-animal bond and making vet visits less stressful for pets.
“I am passionate about decreasing anxiety and fear in my patients while in the veterinary setting and in their daily life,” she says. “I strive to make them as comfortable as possible while in our care.”
She also has a deep love for dermatology. If your pet has been dealing with chronic allergies or skin issues, Dr. Blackburn is someone you will want in your corner.
“I get so much fulfillment from seeing my patients’ quality of life improve, often drastically, by managing chronic allergies and other skin-related issues.”
Anyone who has watched a dog go from constantly itching to finally comfortable knows exactly what she means.
Life Outside the Clinic
At home, Dr. Blackburn keeps busy with her husband, rescue dogs Lucille, Bacon, and Buck, and rescue cats Alli and Carlos.
In their free time, she and her husband are regulars at Zoo Tampa. “Every visit is different, and we enjoy seeing the same animals each time and really getting to know them.”
