If you have had an appointment at Paw Haven, there is a good chance you have already met Dr. Jennifer Glass. As one of our Associate Veterinarians, she brings a mix of traditional medicine, acupuncture, and a genuine love for getting to know clients and their pets. Today, we wanted to take a little extra time to get to know our fantastic vet!
A Lakeland Girl Through and Through
Dr. Glass grew up right here in Lakeland. She headed to the University of Florida for undergrad before attending Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine. But don’t worry, she is still a Gator at heart, even after vet school!
After graduation, she worked at a clinic in Sarasota for several years. But when she got married, she and her husband decided it was time to come home.
“I grew up here pretty much all my life,” she says. “I’m familiar with the area, enjoy being back close to my family, and we’re looking forward to spending a long time here at Paw Haven.”
Why She Loves What She Does
“As you can imagine, I got into veterinary medicine because I love animals, as all of us do,” Dr. Glass says. “I have always really liked biology and science, and I love cats and dogs.
But ask her what she loves most about the job, and it comes back to people just as much as pets.
“One of the things I love the most about veterinary medicine is the bond between clients and their pets, and how I as a doctor can kind of facilitate that and just help heal our pets and heal the bond that they share with their owners.”
She finds just as much joy in the small moments as the bigger procedures, and she loves the everyday interactions with her clients and their pets. She also enjoys surgery and has a special place in her heart for acupuncture.
What Is Acupuncture for Pets?
Acupuncture is rooted in Eastern Chinese medicine and centers on the concept of Qi, the body’s natural energy flow. When a pet develops an illness, that energy flow becomes disrupted. Acupuncture works by targeting specific points on the body to help restore that balance.
Dr. Glass is certified in veterinary acupuncture through the Chi University of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine, which is something that sets her apart from a lot of general practice vets. She uses it most often for arthritis, neurologic conditions like seizures, and intervertebral disc disease, which often shows up as back issues. For pets dealing with chronic pain, it can be a valuable addition alongside more traditional treatment.
Life Outside of Paw Haven
When she is not at the clinic, Dr. Glass loves a good Disney trip with her husband. They are also avid hikers with their dogs and big musical theater fans, frequently making the trip to the Straz Center in Tampa to catch a show. Do you think her favorite musical is Cats?
